South Transfer Station is a dump. It's dirty, smelly, and there's always a line. But it's the only place to go if you need to dispose of large items like furniture or appliances. The staff is friendly and helpful, but the whole experience is still pretty unpleasant.

Gentry Lange rated it 5/5: Always try to get the newly built stations. Old stations have short walls protecting you from falling in the dump pit. This means you gotta lift all your trash over a wall. This sucks.
New stations, like the southern one, solve this by having you dump everything right on the ground and then pushing all trash and greens with machines into the pit. No double lifting all your trash.
MSW rated it 4/5: I'm not sure who bothers to review the dump / transfer station but I'll give it a try. This is a transfer station where refuse etc is collected and then later trucked to the king county landfill out by Maple Valley. Stuff is sorted for recycling etc by you, the person dropping off. You drive through a booth where you're weight is taken, then drive into the big building, unload, then drive back out through a weight booth to pay. They take tires and appliances. There is a hazmat drop off accross the street but it does not have the same hours, check first. Easy location to use, new residents to the region may want to Google map WITH SATELLITE view to see where to go. The cluster F of the Hobart / First Ave South Bridge / 99 / 599 / West and East Marginal / Michigan St interchange can confuse even locals.

North Transfer Station is a garbage dump. It is located in the north end of Seattle and is very dirty and smelly. There are lots of rats and cockroaches. The staff is very unprofessional and doesn't seem to care about the customers. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Spent an hour there and saw around 25 garbage trucks dump their loads.

Great place to take kids of all ages.

The Seattle Public Utilities Transfer Station is a world-class facility that provides an excellent experience for its customers. The staff is professional and courteous, and the facility is clean and well-maintained. The Transfer Station is a great place to recycle and dispose of waste, and it is highly recommended by customers.

Con: The traffic flow is very slow and when you enter the building you don't toss your garbage into a pit, you just throw it on the ground behind your vehicle. Seems like they didn't put a whole lot of thought into this and it makes for a complete mess on the ground that you have to walk through and then track back into your vehicle Also the minimum charge is $30!

Every other transfer station that I have been to, you drive your car on an upper level and throw your garbage over a ledge to a lower level. Here, you are on the garbage level, and there is a layer of sludge under your feet. Why did they design this facility this way?
